Why Should Teachers Do It All?
To the Editor: Re " Are We Asking Too Much From Our Teachers? " (Sunday Review, Sept. 16): I commend Alex Kotlowitz for highlighting the issues we face in educating our most impoverished children. Asking teachers alone to find solutions for the myriad issues students bring with them every day, let alone teaching them to read, write and do arithmetic, is too much.
